Mew - Frengers (2003)

8:12 PM Posted by Joey Dunst

Genre: Indie, Progressive

Mew
have quickly become one of my favorite bands, and Frengers my favorite album by them. Shorter and more concise than the last album I posted (No More Stories), Frengers is basically happiness embodied in sound. It's just that awesome. I care about everything just a little bit less when listening to Frengers, it just takes me away.

Give it a shot.

Gavin Castleton - Home

Wow this was a great find. I'd seen this album floating around various locations but had never bothered to check it out. Reading reviews and looking in a few places, I deemed this album as one that merited a listen. I'm glad I did. This is a phenomenal album filled with quirky instrumental turns and insanely funky bass lines. The opening song has an almost broadway-esque vocal delivery and some songs have a definite element of hip hop in them. I say element because there's still room in the music for progressive rock, funk, salsa and electronica. SALSA and ELECTRONICA and PROG ROCK. I mean come ON. The music is all at once catchy as hell, danceable, musically virtuosic and sonically rich. You can keep coming back to the music and each time you'll feel the same rewarding feeling. This album is fantastic and comes highly recommended. Even more highly recommended than normal. Just get it.

Oceansize

Oceansize is a band from Manchester that combines progressive rock with post rock and shoegaze to form monstrous, atmospheric and intricate tracks. No other band has such an apt name. They're one of my favourite bands of all time and if you haven't heard them before just check them out.

Their best releases are Effloresce and Frames, but Everyone Into Position is the easiest to get into. I would start with either Effloresce or Everyone Into Position
